FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 29, 1999 XactCopy™ Immediate Disaster RecoveryEnhancement Gives System Administrators More Frequent Backups, Less Data LossNevada City, CA - What if there were a way to reduce the evening commute from two hours to five minutes? What if the same technology could get you home at lunchtime, too? Although this sort of traffic-busting technology doesn't yet exist, DuoCor has introduced a server backup technology that will achieve an equivalent result - the flexibility to backup an entire system during the day when users are updating files and consuming system resources. DuoCor, the leader in disaster recovery technology, has teamed with Columbia Data Products, the leader in True Image storage solutions, to integrate CDP's Open Transaction Manager into DuoCor's XactCopy for Windows NT. The result is that administrators can conduct more frequent, fast and live system backups of an open database or other application and experience less data loss when recovering from a system or hard disk failure. "We're excited about the opportunities that the integration of OTM provides with XactCopy's fast, full-system backup capability," said DuoCor President Bob Altieri. "Immediate system recovery is only half of the equation; assuring more up-to-date data is the other half. When OTM is combined with the incredibly fast speed of XactCopy's full-system updates, system managers can perform more frequent backups during peak times to minimize data loss." Alan Welsh, president of Columbia Data Products, added, "With today's emphasis on non-intrusive data management methodologies, technologies such as XactCopy with OTM become an obvious choice for customers running 24x7, global operations." Incremental Backup to Hidden Disk XactCopy performs an incremental backup to a secondary disk that is hidden from the operating system. Altieri said that a disk backup can be made in a fraction of the time it takes to make a tape backup because XactCopy compares data between the hidden drive and its matched system drive and only updates what has changed. "The end result is a full-system backup in typically less than three minutes," said Altieri. Why Clean and Fast Backups Are Important Many backup solutions offer clean backups of database files, but they typically slow down the system or delay the backup operation to unacceptable durations. As a result, system administrators typically put off the backup operation until the evening or other low traffic times. Altieri noted that the combination of XactCopy and OTM gives the user the abilty to increase the frequency of backups, thereby reducing data loss when system recovery is necessary. Specific "Backup Window" Problem is Solved "Administrators now can do full-system backups at anytime without significantly affecting system performance," Altieri said. Neither OTM nor XactCopy require large system resources. "Our partnership with DuoCor validates our technology as a critical tool for today's backup customer," said Steve Guerra, general manager of Columbia Data products. Altieri cautions administrators that while backup time is fast, the secondary disk is overwritten with each backup. "XactCopy is designed for immediate disaster recovery, not to archive data," he said. XactCopy adds a dimension of protection that supplements existing structures and that currently is not available from a tape system. "The ultimate result of these improvements is that productivity is greatly enhanced," Altieri noted.
